Erin O’Brien has been a faculty member at Utah Tech University for nearly two decades. Originally from Virginia, she studied biology around the world before joining the university. O’Brien credits her professional success to the mentors who encouraged her to pursue opportunities beyond the classroom, and she believes much of the value of a college education comes from experiences outside of formal coursework.
She helps students access those opportunities by representing Utah Tech in the Intergovernmental Internship Cooperative and serving as director of Community Engaged Learning.
RESEARCH & INTERESTS
O’Brien’s research is in plant physiological ecology with a focus on below-ground interactions and water use. The local desert species are ideal study organisms, as several engage in poorly studied behaviors including the equivalents of nepotism and establishing territories. She works with students both in the field and with local partners, including ongoing collaborations with vineyards to develop research projects. She also assists local federal agencies with plant conservation biology research. Because of her strong research background, she co-advises students with other faculty members and physicians at the local hospital who are engaged in research.
PUBLICATIONS & PROJECTS
